about
1917 was a pivotal year in World War 1: The Russian revolution, Submarine warfare, America's entry to the war and the notorius and devastating Third Battle of Ypres which culminated in the battle of Passchendaele (the tiny village who's name came to symbolise the true horror of industrialised trench warfare). All this contributed to a world wide 'war-weariness' and calls for 'peace at any cost'.
lyrics
PEACE WITHOUT VICTORY
Here again how much more can we take?
Another year gone by
Day on day until the other breaks
Steel engulfs this sky
Higher ground in a dying sea of mud
Our brothers fell in waves
Few remain who'd understand this hell
Murdered hopes and faiths
Set my place and pull out my chair for me
Though I won't be home
Remember a place in our history
And set it in stone
From The Pilkem Ridge to The Menin Road
Facing Passchendaele
Herding lambs to feed the guns
The final coffin nail
Set my place and pull out my chair for me
Though I won't be home
I'll imagine a peace without victory
That seed has been sewn
Set my place and pull out my chair for me
Though I won't be home
Remember that place in our history
And set it in stone
It’s etched on our senses and it’s tied to our tongues
It lies on our breath as if it hides in our lungs
It’s taken our world to be brought to its knees
To imagine a peace without victory
Set my place and pull out my chair for me
Though I won't be home
Remember that place in our history
Now its set in stone
Set my place and pull out my chair for me
Though I won’t be home
Subdued and elegiac songs from Tom Kelly that have the grandeur of classical music, the technicality of prog, and the sweep of synthwave. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 6, 2020
