about
1916/17 was the coldest winter for a generation. After the titanic battles of Verdun and The Somme earlier in 1916, the bitterly cold winter would test the morale of both troops and civilians. The war was now in it's third year. Growing hardships and the huge losses faced in those battles of attrition, with no considerable gains, marked a turning point in the domestic morale on all sides and a widespread sense that the war might never end.
lyrics
THE WAR CANNOT BE WON
The ice is holding fast in the full glare of the sun
A dawning moment passed before the pounding of the guns
Before I woke you were beside me
You whispered in my ear
The War cannot be won
The snow is falling hard, the coldest winter we have known
To test the hardest hearts and turn the whole place into stone
We may have lived through Ypres and Verdun
We are survivors of The Somme but
This War cannot be won
From the front line to the rear
The cracks have started to appear
And I still hear your whisper in my ear...
A time to reach for truth face to face on common ground
As every soul unwinds the time to live is running down
There cannot be a peaceful outcome
If there can’t be a peaceful end
So this war cannot be won
From the front line to the rear
The cracks have started to appear
And I still hear your whisper in my ear...
As the day unfolds it turns to white, the sky to grey
For every soul that's sold we'll take another step today
A much too heavy price to pay

FROM ECLIPSED:
With their fourth CD, the English duo F2G does not deny that it developed from a Pink Floyd cover band. Mid-tempo, Gilmouresque solos and melodies that are dark and uplifting at the same time. With the song offered here, one feels pleasantly sucked into a parallel universe to Floyd's "Animals".
Subdued and elegiac songs from Tom Kelly that have the grandeur of classical music, the technicality of prog, and the sweep of synthwave. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 6, 2020
